Derby Days: Louisville, KY

Derby Days: Louisville, KY

Ah, the Kentucky Derby! The hats. The horses. More hats. The mint juleps. The bets. And those hats!

The Derby, as it’s called by locals, is a rich—perhaps even dizzying—spectacle of athletic horses, super-skilled jockeys, a truly Southern social scene, and carefree party of epic proportions.

Whether you’re a Louisvillian who awaits this day in their “backyard” throughout the year or a global traveler who’s checking off a bucket list, you’re most certain to cite the Derby as a “must-do” experience. An experience it is, indeed.

Although you essentially could buy a ticket on Derby day to join the festivities, some planning ahead will save you from the frenzied flood of college students and other revelers that kick up the party a few notches in the infield. It’s always held on the first Saturday of May, so a few tips can help you make the most of this worthwhile experience.

Go for the full “Derby Experience”

If you’re not a seat license, season ti...

Q&A with Anne Behrend

Anne Behrend, former Chief Financial Officer, Jetcraft

Location: Indianapolis, IN, USA

[email protected]

How long have you been at Jetcraft?

It’s hard to believe, but I have been with Jetcraft just over 19 years!  When I started with the company, we had one office in Raleigh, and I was one of 6 people working for the company at that time.

What are your responsibilities within the global Jetcraft team?

I am privileged to serve as the Chief Financial Officer, and have the responsibility of overseeing worldwide financial, treasury and human resource functions within the company.  I have a wonderful, dedicated team that works alongside me to handle the day-to-day requirements of these functions.

Describe a typical day or week in your role.

I’m not sure there is a typical day!  I often start out my day with a list of what I would like to accomplish, but will often have to delay that work when requests to study new deal or business opportunities arise.  I ...

Avionics Mandates Part 4: What you Should Know about ADS-B

Avionics Mandates Part 4: What you Should Know about ADS-B

AvBuyer Magazine, April 2015

Helping you to familiarize with avionics advances and related mandates for equipage, Ken Elliott reviews aviation technologies within the NextGen/SESAR architecture, this month focusing on ADS-B.

In line with domestic and international aviation goals, industry and certification authorities have developed a complete suite of integrated technologies under the umbrella of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS). One significant element of this, under the Surveillance segment, is Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS).

As the term implies, ADS serves the need to automate the sharing of data between all users, air and ground, that inform the position and movement status of an aircraft. There are two ways to accomplish this from a worldwide perspective, one being Broadcast (B) and the other Contract (C), hence the terms ADS-B and ADS-C.

Broadcast is literally the ability to send and receive th...

Falcon 2000LXS Overview (2014-Present)

Falcon 2000LXS Overview (2014-Present)

Overview including differentiating features from other aircraft in its category

The Falcon 2000LXS was designed as a replacement for its predecessor, the Falcon 2000LX. One of the biggest differentiating features of the 2000LXS is the model’s improved short field capability. The reduced landing distance allows for more airports to open up compared to other aircraft in its class.

As of February 2015, the Falcon 2000LXS market is comprised of 6% pre-owned. The percentage for sale is 10.5% with 50% under an exclusive broker agreement and average days on the market are 46 days.

Brief History

The Falcon 2000LXS debuted in 2014. There have been a total of 23 aircraft produced with 19 currently in operation.

Worldwide Appeal

Of the 19 Falcon 2000LXS in operation by continent, North America has 63%, followed by Europe at 25% for a combined total of 88%. There is only one company (International Paper Company) having a 2 aircraft fleet, the others are all single aircraft owne...

Race to Shanghai this spring

Race to Shanghai this spring

Race to Shanghai this spring

Each spring, Shanghai hosts the Formula 1® UBS Chinese Grand Prix.  This New York Times article “Short History of Shanghai” illustrates why this high-energy, fast-paced race is a fitting metaphor for visiting the largest city in China. Simply put, Shanghai has transformed itself from a fishing village at the mouth of the Yangtze River to a competitive, global financial giant.

Shanghai’s course took this turn most grandly in 1990 when China’s then-leader Deng Xiaoping set the city on a lightning-speed path to compete with Hong Kong by 2010. Indeed, many argue that Shanghai is a worthy competitor. As Xiaoping said, “If China is a dragon, Shanghai is its head.” Perhaps no longer should we think of China as an “emerging economy.” With Shanghai in a front position, Team China has arrived.

A high octane visit

The F1 metaphor is an apt planning guide for your Shanghai visit. First, see what the Grand Prix itself is all about. These vi...

Q&A with Pascal Bachmann

Q&A with Pascal Bachmann

Pascal Bachmann, Aircraft Sales, Jetcraft

Location: Geneva, Switzerland

[email protected]       +41 79 200 56 33

How long have you been at Jetcraft?

I have been with Jetcraft for nearly two years now. I joined the Jetcraft team when they acquired the ExecuJet Aircraft Trading group.

What are your responsibilities within the global Jetcraft team?

I am a sales person, my role is to develop Jetcraft’s business in Europe alongside my friends Chris and Guillaume. Of course, I deal primarily in pre-owned (pre-enjoyed?) aircraft, but I also am in the enviable position to sell new aircraft as well. Last year we delivered two new aircraft to their happy new owners in Switzerland, a Global 5000 and a Falcon 900LX.

Describe a typical day or week in your role.

There is no such thing as a typical day in what I do. A lot of time is spent traveling and meeting interesting people in nice places. There are also days spent in my office, catching up on things I have...

Avionics Mandates Part 3: What you should know about FANS 1/A+ – ATN-B2

Helping you to familiarize with avionics advances and related mandates for equipage, Ken Elliott reviews aviation technologies within NextGen, this month focusing on Part 2 of Data Comm, covering FANS 1/A+ and ATN-B2.

Last month we addressed the first of Data Comm’s two main areas; ATN-B1 (Controller Pilot Data Link Communications, or CPDLC). This month we look at the second part, FANS 1/A+ (including ATN-B2). We covered the Data Comm history reaching the point in time when FANS 1/A + was introduced.

FANS Historical Recap

In 1983 ICAO began an effort to establish a DataLink architecture under its Future Air Navigation System (FANS) structure. This advance became the architecture and protocol standard of an oceanic communications network where heretofore HF and early Satcom ruled. Boeing, a long time user of the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), developed FANS-1 to...
