Winter Escape to the Desert: Abu Dhabi

Winter Escape to the Desert: Abu Dhabi

There are many reasons why early in the year is the ideal time to visit Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s low-key, easy-going sibling. At that top of the list is weather. This capital city of the United Arab Emirates promises much more manageable temperatures (around the low 20s Celsius/high 60sF) in the new year than during the sweltering seasons. After all, just beyond the city and its gorgeous setting along the Persian Gulf is pure desert.

Plan to take advantage of Abu Dhabi's diverse, appealing offerings regardless of when you go:

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center

A vacation to Abu Dhabi is not complete without seeing the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (pictured). The largest mosque outside Mecca or Medina, it is a stunning and reverent architectural center. The Mosque is closed for tourism during worship on Friday morning to 5:00 pm, but general visiting hours are available Saturday through Thursday from 9am and 10pm.

Heritage Village

For a true glimpse of pre-oil, historical...

Avionics Mandates Part 1: An In Depth Review

Avionics Mandates Part 1: An In Depth Review

AvBuyer Magazine, January 2015 by Ken Elliott

Download a PDF of the article.

For the next 12 months Ken Elliott will be navigating the complex world of avionic mandates, offering a comprehensive, clear, 360 degree view of NextGen and all that comes with it...

While we will be using the term ‘mandate’ within the following series, the context first needs to be explained. In this series the terms ‘mandates’, ‘requirements’, ‘recommendations’, ‘rules’ or ‘operational guidance’ may be used interchangeably because in reality, they are interpreted much the same by transport authorities.

Mandates from an operator’s perspective are requirements to be complied with in order to complete mission profiles. For a light jet operator domestically-based and flying regionally there will be less compliance needs than for an intercontinental large cabin operator flying across different controlled airspaces.

Even when not mandated to equip, though, an operator desiring additional ...

Gulfstream GIV-SP Overview (1992 – 2002)

Overview including differentiating features from other aircraft in its category

The Gulfstream GIV and GIV-SP is a significantly improved, larger, longer-range and advanced development of the earlier GII and GIII. The most significant improvement with the GIV and GIV-SP over the earlier Gulfstream models is the Rolls-Royce Tay engines, which bring significant fuel burn and noise emission improvements despite their higher thrust output than the GII and GIII Spey engines.

Other changes included a stretched fuselage, and aerodynamically and structurally improved wing with 30% fewer parts, greater fuel capacity and range, increased span tail and an advanced EFIS avionics suite with six color CRT displays.

The Gulfstream GIV-SP, large cabin Business Jet, gross takeoff weight is 1,400 pounds increase over the GIV. Like the GIV it employs a Goodyear Aerospace brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system, making pilot maneuverability easier.

Challenges and Opportunities in African Business Aviation

Challenges and Opportunities in African Business Aviation

Jetcraft is expanding rapidly in the continent by turning challenges into opportunities and adding a local touch to customer service

Everyone realizes that business aviation is a global industry that reaches across the entire planet. But in recent years, the industry has turned its attention to Africa as private aircraft ownership has truly taken off in this relatively new market.

Economic growth has driven much of this increase as the continent’s economy has been surging by about 5 percent annually, which is a rate expected to continue through 2015. Private jet ownership is also expected to grow at the steady pace of 5.6 percent over the next two decades according to a recent report issued by Boeing.

So why is Africa enjoying a boom in private jet ownership?

There are several elements spurring this growth. Africa is among the fastest rising private aviation markets due to a strengthening economy and a related increase in high net worth individuals (HNWI). The ultra-high...

Challenger 604 Overview (1995 – 2006)

Overview including differentiating features from other aircraft in its category

Bombardier introduced its Challenger 604 in 1995 as a major upgrade on the Challenger 601 design, incorporating more powerful engines, larger fuel supply, completely new undercarriage, structural improvements to wings and tail, and a new electronic flight instrumentation system. As of January 2014, the Challenger 604 market is comprised of 100% pre-owned. The percentage for sale is 8.8% w...
